Blogging
From Roots of Hope Wiki
Introduction
Blogs have sprouted up about every kind of topic imaginable and Cuba is no exception. Blogging has been one of the only avenues somewhat available even if still limited that many Cuban citizens have at an attempt to free speech. Internet access on the island is extremely limited, costly, and highly censured. Nevertheless blogs by Cuban writers have garnered the attention of readers and media worldwide, not to mention peace organizations, and governments. One of Cuba’s most famous bloggers Yoani Sanchez was named one of Time Magazine’s Most Influential People of the Year in 2008. Her work has been translated in numerous languages, and she has a published collection of selected blog entries that were complied into a book title Cuba Libre (Free Cuba) and released in 2010.
Yoani’s work along with many other bloggers both inside and outside the island have opened windows into the real life of Cubans on the island, a life that is romanticized and, at times, grossly misrepresented in official government accounts.
