Studying abroad is another great way to learn more about Cuba and its culture. Study abroad programs are ideal for those who wish to interact with other Cuban youth and to remain on the island for more prolonged periods of time that might be affordable through direct travel. The number of study abroad programs based in Cuba has unfortunately declined in the past decade due changes in restrictions. However, recent changes to U.S.-Cuba policy enacted in January 2011 will now allow academic institutions to establish study-abroad programs through a general license, as result many more options will likely be available in the near future. The changes also allow students to enroll in programs offered through other institutions other than their own, so that many of school specific restrictions outlined below may also change in the near future.
